SUMMARY:IRB Road Trip: Your journey to successful human research
DESCRIPTION:Navigating the IRB process can feel like planning a long road trip: There are rules to follow\, routes to map out\, and an occasional detour along the way. Join us for IRB Road Trip\, an engaging workshop designed to help researchers confidently navigate every stage of the IRB process. \n\nIRB Road Trip\nFriday\, Oct. 9 | 1 – 4 p.m.\nKansas Memorial Union\, Malott Room \nRegister by Sept. 15\n\nAttendees are welcome to attend one or both of the following sessions:\n\nSession 1 | 1 – 2:25 p.m.\n\nMapping Your Route: IRB Basics & Core Regulations\n\nEvery successful road trip starts with a map. In this session\, we'll explore the foundations of human subjects research\, from the history of research ethics and the Belmont Report to the criteria IRBs use when reviewing studies. Participants will learn how ethical principles guide research decisions and gain a practical understanding of the regulations that keep research participants safe.\n\nPacking for the Trip: Preparing Your IRB Submission\n\nBefore hitting the road\, you need the right supplies. This session walks participants through the IRB submission process\, including investigator qualifications\, required training\, submission checklists\, navigating the eCompliance system\, review timelines\, and how to manage modifications after approval. You'll leave with practical tips to help make your next submission as smooth as possible.\n\nSession 2 | 2:30 – 4 p.m.\n\nNavigating Detours:\nSpecial Considerations in Human Research\n\nEven the best-planned trips encounter unexpected turns. In this session\, we'll discuss common situations that require extra attention\, including vulnerable populations\, cooperative research\, deception\, adverse events and reportable incidents\, participant payments\, recruitment strategies\, secondary data research and data sharing. We'll explore how to navigate these challenges while staying on course with ethical and regulatory requirements.\n\nScenic Stop: Ask the IRB\n\nEvery road trip is better when you can stop and ask for directions. We'll wrap up the workshop with a Q&A session where participants can bring their questions\, discuss real-world scenarios and learn from the experiences of fellow researchers. This collaborative conversation is designed to reinforce key concepts and help you leave feeling confident about the road ahead.
